Lacking the reason to justify splashing out on the Petersham Nurseries Cafe but still wanting the enchanting garden centre’s surroundings, we set out for the Petersham Nurseries Teahouse.
Tucked away near the big bend on Petersham Road in Richmond Upon Thames. Parking is along the entrance lane to the garden centre. We had to wait for someone to leave to get a spot.
Do not wear good shoes, it hadn’t rained that day but we had to trudge through puddles and ended up with muddy shoes.
Can be a slow moving queue (in one door and out the other.) The staff are super friendly but they could do with a few more during the busy lunch period to speed things up. We avoided this by going right at the 12 noon opening time.
The menu is mainly soups, salads and quiche. There are also cakes and baked goodies if you only want an afternoon treat. And when they say teahouse they mean it:
You can choose to sit inside the glasshouse or at one of the tables in the trellised area in front of the cafe. There are also several more tables along the far wall (past the toilets.) You’re sure to find a place to sit because there are more tables than parking spots. (Do heaps of people come here by bus?)
We started with the most amazing fresh made lemonade ever.
Marie had spinach, nettle and goat cheese quiche which was insanely good, full of flavour and not heavy. Green salad came with it and was just blah with those annoying spindly leaves that are hard to get in your mouth. She’s not convinced there was any dressing on it.
Lynn had the choice of two salads option, there were several to chose from and she ended up with caprese and chicken & rice salad. The salads were fresh, tasty and perfectly dressed.
Many people put off going to the renowned Petersham Nurseries Cafe because of the prices, but you can still enjoy the fairytale Petersham Nurseries surrounds for a much more affordable price in the Petersham Nurseries Teahouse. It’s still not cheap, but you’re paying for your surroundings and the food is incredibly yummy. It’s definitely worth a visit
